History Meets Technology

Future Home is located on a twenty six acre site in Maryland's Gunpowder State Park. The house and its cluster of farm buildings was rescued from demolition in 1986 by now Resident Curator, Dave Ward, and has Been listed by the Maryland Historical Registry.

In the horse and buggy days this 140 year old Tavern and Inn was an anticipated stop for weary travelers going between Baltimore, Maryland and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The main house was increased in size in a way that was normal for early rural structures, as need demanded. Again, American's needs have demanded change in housing. Once again, the house has grown to meet these needs. The old Smith Tavern has become a national demonstration project to showcase ideas for independent living for physically challenged individuals and aging population.

Future Home was conceived by a team of highly skilled volunteers who were committed to the empowerment of the disabled population. Universal design has meant the elimination of architectural barriers such as narrow doorways, opting for ramps instead of steps, and installing grab bars.  Future Home will take accessible housing into the next generation. What good is a ramp when once you are in the room you're still totally dependent on others to handle the environmental control, the communications devices, or even to get your medication.
